When you transfer to VT, you're a Hokie
If you decide to transfer to Virginia Tech, you won't be a transfer student, you'll be a Hokie. At Virginia Tech our undergraduate students have access to a bunch of great things. Here's a short list:
- nationally and internationally recognized faculty who are experts in their fields
- groundbreaking research - undergraduate students can get in on research at VT
- cutting edge technology
- study abroad
- nearly 700 student clubs and organizations - you name what you are interested in and chances are we have it!
- award wining dining halls
- a beautiful campus
To get a better feel for what Virginia Tech is all about, check out www.vt.edu/about. Also, you should try to visit campus if at all possible. We have a few upcoming events that are specific to transfer students:
- Transfer Fall Open House - Saturday, September 25 & Saturday, November 6
- Fall Transfer Visit Days - Friday, October 22 (VCCS students) & Friday, November 12 (all transfer students)
If you visit and you decide that you want to be a Hokie, keep the following dates and deadlines in mind.
Transfer Application Due: February 15 (Fall 2011 admission)
Applicants are notified by May 1
Offered students must respond by June 1

Attention New Hokies: Upcoming deadlines for transfer students
Congratulations are in order if you have been accepted to Virginia Tech as a transfer student! Below are some key dates and deadlines you should keep in mind.
- If you haven't already, you need to accept the offer of admission by paying your matriculation deposit. Deadline: June 1.
- Once you have accepted the offer of admission and paid your matriculation deposit, you need to create your VT PID. Please keep in mind that if you pay your matriculation deposit online, please wait at least 1 business day for us to process your payment. You will not be able to create your PID until your payment has been processed. (As soon as you accept the offer of admission)
- Get ready for July Orientation. (Sign up in May)
- Look for your computer specifications (Available in May)
- Submit your Immunization History Form (Complete in June)
- Submit your final high school and college transcripts (Deadline: June)
- Consider attending Hokie Camp! (Sign up anytime)

Deadlines, Deadlines, Deadlines
The application deadline for transfer students is February 15. Remember to submit your transcripts from all previous colleges. We can accept unofficial transcripts during the application review process, but you still need to send us official transcripts as soon as possible. The University Registrar must have official transcripts in order to give you credit for the coursework you have completed. You will be notified by May 1 of our admission decision. However, we try to get offers out as soon as possible. We do what we call a modified rolling admission. So, if you get your application to us (with your transcripts) in January, there's a good chance you will hear from us before May 1. We do this because we realize that you have to make plans and we want to let you know our decision as soon as possible so you can make the appropriate plans to continue your education.
Each year we receive about 3,000 applications for approximately 1,000 spots. The most important factors we look at for admission are:
- Substantial progress toward prerequisite courses - especially English and math and the science for your intended major.
- GPA - we consider applicants with a 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or better, but the most competitive applicants have a 3.0 or better. Check out our articulation agreements with the Virginia Community College System.
- Applicants are in good standing with the colleges and universities they have attended.
If you are interested in scholarships and financial aid, you must complete the FAFSA (be sure to have it sent to Virginia Tech - code: 003754). The deadline for the FAFSA and General Scholarship Application is March 1. A lot of our scholarships at VT require the FAFSA. So, you will need to fill it out even if you think you won't qualify for aid.
