The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is hosting two events for students interested in transferring to Virginia Tech during the month of November: Transfer Open House on November 12 and Transfer Visit Day on November 18.

I became a Hokie in the fall of 2009 after spending two years at Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach, Va.

The whole idea of starting at community college and then transferring to a four-year school was not what I had in mind as a high school senior. But as I know now and am constantly reminded, things do not always go as planned.

Staying home for the first two years of my college education turned out to be a blessing in disguise. During that time I grew up, and I came to realize that I was not as ready to leave home as I thought I was. In fact, after I had finished with my associates at TCC, I started to second-guess my decision to go away for my remaining two years. I was comfortable at home, I had friends and family and a continuous support system whenever I needed. I felt like I was leaving everything I had worked so hard to build over the past two years just to have to start again.

All it took was one last visit to Virginia Tech's campus before I was scheduled to start in the fall to reassure me that Tech was the right fit. I learned very quickly that at Virginia Tech you are not a transfer student, you are a Hokie. Everyone is a Hokie and we are all a part of the Hokie Nation. Orange and Maroon constantly flood the campus and the sense of community that takes place in Blacksburg is unlike anywhere else.

Virginia Tech has taught me more than the lessons learned inside the classroom. I have learned how important it is to be opened minded to all opportunities you are presented with.

To all you potential and new Hokies out there, I'd like to share a few things that I have learned since becoming a Hokie. Whether you chose to become a Hokie as well by transferring to Virginia Tech, I hope you will take these small pieces of advice with you:

Be proactive; take the time to introduce yourself and meet with your professors and advisors. It will help so much in the long run.
Don't hesitate to ask questions. Ask as many as you'd like and ask them more than once if you have to.
And finally, don't blink. Wherever you decide to transfer, know your time as a student is going to fly by. Make sure you take the time to make the experiences all your own. Fill your time with memories, whether good or bad, and get involved.

Remember, you are the only person responsible for your transfer experience.

Transfer students can choose their major from seven colleges - more than 70 programs of study at Virginia Tech.

With that said, some of the seven colleges have schools. The College of Architecture and Urban Studies (CAUS) contains four schools:

The School of Architecture + Design

The Myers-Lawson School of Construction

The School of Public and International Affairs

The School of Visual Arts

The College of Architecture and Urban Studies is highly competitive. The most competitive majors within this college include those within the School of Architecture + Design (architecture, interior design, industrial design, and landscape architecture). Students who have a high A average and have a minimum combined SAT score of 1250 (critical reading + math) will find that they are most competitive for the degree programs within this school.

There are 11 student organizations specific to the CAUS. Check out the education abroad opportunities.

The School of Architecture + Design contains four majors:

Architecture - This is a five-year, studio-based bachelor degree program that is accredited by the National Architectural Accreditation Board. Design Intelligence ranks this program #2 in the nation. Learn more

Interior Design - This is a four-year bachelor degree program accredited by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification. Interior design is not about learning how to pick the right paint color to go with the furniture in a room. Interior design is about designing the construction and finishing of buildings. The Myers-Lawson School of Construction currently provides undergraduate students with a bachelor's degree in building construction. This degree program is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education. In case you aren't familiar with Virginia Tech verbiage - our university has seven colleges that offer undergraduate degrees. Each college offers majors and minors galore. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech offers a variety of majors. Below is a list of the majors offered in CALS for your reading and clicking pleasure (links provided). Deciding what you want to major in at college can be overwhelming. From Accounting and Information Systems to Wood Science and Forest Products, Virginia Tech has more than 70 programs of study to offer you.

At Virginia Tech, we have seven colleges that offer undergraduate majors. Below please find a brief description of the colleges and links to see what majors they offer. If you're at a loss as to what you want to major in, maybe you will find something that will spark your interest.

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences: A place where you can study biotechnology, the environment, food production and product development, business, animal or human health, or community development, just to mention a few of the options.

College of Architecture and Urban Studies: Annually, DesignIntelligence, the only national college-ranking survey focused exclusively on design-related programs, ranks the School of Architecture + Design undergraduate architecture program among the top 5 in the nation.

Pamplin College of Business: It is ranked in the top 50 undergraduate business schools by U.S. News and World Report and in the top 10 percent of accredited business programs. Five of the top seven most recruited majors on campus are in the Pamplin College of Business.

College of Engineering: It is the state's largest engineering college, and fifth largest nationally for undergraduate degrees awarded. America’s Best Colleges 2010 survey released by U.S. News & World Report ranked the Virginia Tech College of Engineering's undergraduate program 14th in the nation among all accredited engineering schools that offer doctorates. The National Science Foundation lists the college as 10th in total research expenditures.

College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences: Often referred to as the "people college," our alumni are making their marks in the worlds of business, industry, entertainment, education, government, and research.

College of Natural Resources and Environment: Our programs are ranked among the best in the country and address both the technical and human elements of natural resources and instill in students a sense of stewardship and land-use ethics.

Attention New Hokies: Upcoming deadlines for transfer students

Congratulations are in order if you have been accepted to Virginia Tech as a transfer student! Below are some key dates and deadlines you should keep in mind.

If you haven't already, you need to accept the offer of admission by paying your matriculation deposit. Deadline: June 1.
Once you have accepted the offer of admission and paid your matriculation deposit, you need to create your VT PID. Please keep in mind that if you pay your matriculation deposit online, please wait at least 1 business day for us to process your payment. You will not be able to create your PID until your payment has been processed. (As soon as you accept the offer of admission)
Get ready for July Orientation. (Sign up in May)
Look for your computer specifications (Available in May)
Submit your Immunization History Form (Complete in June)

The waiting game

Waiting is tough in general. Waiting to hear back from the college to which you applied so you can shore up your college plans can create a whole new level of impatience. We get that. With that said, we are trying to get notifications out as soon as possible.

All notifications to transfer applicants will be distributed in time for you to learn your admission decision by the national notification date, which is May 1. With that said, a few rounds of admission decisions have already been released, the latest round of letters were mailed this week. To learn whether your application is still pending or if a decision has been made, check out your application status page.

It's easy being green

The great Kermit the Frog once said, "It's not easy being green." That might be true for The Muppet star; however, finding green in the sea of maroon and orange at Virginia Tech is easy.

In fact, the university has a strong commitment to building a sustainable campus. Annually, Virginia Tech partners with the Town of Blacksburg and Sustainable Blacksburg for Sustainability Week, where several events are held both on and off campus that highlight green initiatives and goals.

The university's Alternative Transportation department provides great green options for students, faculty, and staff to include carpool and vanpool programs and the Bike, Bus, & Walk program. Virginia Tech's Alternative Transportation department consistently receives the Best Workplaces for Commuters award, taking gold in the December 2009 "Race to Excellence" Virtual Awards Ceremony.

Recycling is a big deal on campus. You'll spot large maroon recycling bins in various locations throughout campus. In addition, the university participates in RecycleMania annually.

Sustainable dining initiatives include trayless dining halls and composting.

In 2010, Virginia Tech took one of the elite seats among the Green Commonwealth Challenge winners as a result of the many employees who utilize alternative commuting options and the recent launch of an internal Green Campus Challenge.

In October 2009, Virginia Tech received an overall "B" rating in the annual College Sustainability Report Card.

In addition to being rated #1 in Best Campus Food, The Princeton Review gave Virginia Tech a Green Rating of 93 (on a scale of 60-99) in 2009.

Virginia Tech places great emphasis on outreach. Why? Because it helps to prepare students for the modern workforce and enriches the communities where Hokies live and work. In 2008, the university developed the Center for Student Engagement and Community Partnerships (CSECP). The purpose of the CSECP is to be a liaison between campus and the community, which furthers the university's land-grant mission and helps Hokies live Virginia Tech's motto: Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

The CSECP, with the aid of Service-Learning at VT, even works with faculty to incorporate community service into coursework. At Virginia Tech living off campus is practically living on campus

Off campus housing may as well be considered on campus housing. Blacksburg is a small community and living within the immediate area, the farthest I ever had to travel was approximately 2 miles. With the Blacksburg Transit bus system, getting to campus was easily accessible and time efficient.

In fact, I quickly found that I was filling my gas tank a couple of times every few months. I rarely needed my car even living off campus because of the options made available to me. If public transportation isn't your thing, you'll find people biking all over town. And trust me, there is a bike rack every few hundred feet so no need to worry about where to put your bike once you arrive to your next class or other destination. Even the Blacksburg Transit buses have bike racks on the front.

Where do all the transfers go

We've said it before and we'll say it again: when you transfer to Virginia Tech, you're a Hokie. No "T" label for transfer students. Nope. You're a Hokie, simple as that.

One thing that is slightly different for transfer students is housing. When you're a transfer student, you don't have guarenteed on-campus housing. You can sign up for an on-campus lottery (a transfer housing waitlist), but you should check out off campus housing.

Virginia Tech does a couple of things to help students find off campus housing:

1.) an off campus housing website,

2.) off campus housing fairs.

Keep in mind that when living off campus, you can still take advantage of things like alternative transportation and dining on campus.

Virginia Tech's dining halls have a variety of food options, all of which are amazing! I enjoy West End Market; I love the pasta and burgers there. I also like Hokie Grill & Co., which has a Chick-fil-A and Pizza Hut.

Whether you live on campus or not, I would personally suggest getting a Dining Plan. Although I live off campus, I usually eat lunch and get snacks on campus. I also grab an occasional dinner on campus as well. Most places on campus only accept Dining Plans and Dining Dollars. If you do not purchase a Dining Plan, but find yourself wanting to eat on campus you can add Dining Dollars to your Hokie Passport either throughHokieSpa or Hokie Passport machines located in the dining halls.

Virginia Tech has a variety of options when it comes to Dining Plans, it is important to choose the one best for you. Some things to consider are: whether or not you will be living on campus, how often will you buy groceries or cook for yourself, and if you prefer to go out to eat.

When you get to campus, I hope you give Virginia Tech's national award-winning dining a try!

Upcoming Deadline, March 1: The FAFSA, everyone's doing it

Attention! This is important. Seriously, it's about money. The priority deadline for the FAFSA and Virginia Tech's General Scholarship Application is March 1. The sooner you complete these deals, the better it is for you. Even if you're unsure you'll end up in Hokieland, you should still complete both of these forms. And, even if you think completing the FAFSA is a waste of your time, it's not because some of our scholarships require a completed FAFSA.

Virginia Tech: Think outside of the classroom

Virginia Tech has an extensive selection of clubs, organizations, fraternities, sororities, and service opportunities to choose from.

In my career at Virginia Tech, I have been very active with the university as well as the community. I am President of the Sociological Association at Virginia Tech (SAV) and a Transfer Orientation Guide Leader (TOGL). Both of these positions allow me to hone my leadership and communications skills while having a good time! I have also gained great networks but best of all friends.

Although leadership positions and memberships to organizations are important, service learning and volunteerism is as well. Service learning and volunteerism are amazing learning experiences that everyone should have. I take part in the annual BIG EVENT, which is a community wide service project, which involves the students of Virginia Tech and the Blacksburg and surrounding communities.

Community outreach is significant at Virginia Tech but so is Virginia Tech's global initiatives. With all the options Virginia Tech has there should be no problem for anyone to find their place in the Hokie Family, while making great impacts in others lives as well as their own.

As a high school junior in 2002, I already had my sights locked on Virginia Tech, but a lack of doing homework on a consistent basis landed me with a denial letter and several dashed hopes during the last few months of my adolescent educational career. Deep down, however, I knew that I would be seeing Blacksburg again and that the title “Hokie” simply had to belong to me some day. Therefore, I made my decision to do everything possible to achieve that dream and enrolled in a community college. A few years of hard work later, everything paid off.

My best experiences with the transfer process had to be with the individual care and attention that I received throughout the administrative journey. In the spring of 2007, I received a personal telephone call from an admissions officer welcoming me to Virginia Tech. After I had finished bouncing off of my walls and ceiling with excitement, I sat down and began to realize the work ahead; transferring credits, moving, learning a new curriculum, the list goes on. I received a different kind of phone call shortly thereafter, however. This one had less than stellar news: I was being deployed to Iraq two weeks into my would be first semester at school. The understanding from both the admissions office and the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences was phenomenal. With a few simple phone calls and emails, my transfer package was put on hold and I was issued a very heartfelt “Godspeed” by a staff member that I had never even met. I set my sights once again on Virginia Tech, but this time I had a year and a war to get through first.

As the fall of 2008 quickly approached, I was still deployed and out of communication with the “real world” for days and weeks at a time. This didn't hurt my confidence that, when I finally arrived home, things wouldn't all be in place and set for my first semester. Sure enough, when I arrived home 32 hours before my first class started, I, without any significant effort on my own part, had a housing assignment prepared, a complete class schedule with all syllabi waiting in my in-box, and several emails from professors and the Transfer Student Orientation team welcoming me home. Bear in mind that I had yet to meet any of the faculty or staff at Virginia Tech. Never had I felt so well treated or at home (when I hadn't even been there long enough to call it “home”).

I believe that my take-away from all of this is: Virginia Tech showed me that it really was worth it to pursue my goal of becoming a Hokie. The people that populate this great university's offices and classrooms really do care and are not afraid to go out of their way to show it. I received the personal attention that I would attest only to the smallest of schools (normally) and I will forever be grateful that I had all of these wonderful people that wanted nothing more but than to help me become the Hokie that I am today.

Transferring into the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences was a smooth transition, just like transferring to Virginia Tech was overall. I was given one of the coolest advisors to work with me throughout my time at VT that helped me plan my course load up through my last semester before graduation.

Since I did not declare a communications major until transferring to the university I still needed some freshman level classes. After having to jump through a few small hoops, I was admitted into those classes. In order to graduate in the time I wanted to, I did have to take a few summer classes to get on track. But as many people will tell you, there is nothing like summers in Blacksburg!

Working alongside some of the most educated people in their fields, the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences has some of the nicest professors I ever had and in turn allowed me to form relationships and contacts for networking in the future.

I am a sociology major with a concentration in inequality, and also a minor in psychology. Sociology is a wonderful field to study because it allows one to get a greater experience of diversity; this is also a huge part of what the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences does. The faculty and staff within the college and department do a wonderful job at getting this experience across. I have enjoyed every sociology class I have had, especially Dr. Ellington Graves as I think he is an amazing professor.

The faculty are a huge part of the department but we would be nowhere without the hard working staff that keeps everything running smoothly. The academic advisors do an outstanding job of keeping the students and faculty on track. I also have had the opportunity of getting close with a lot of these individuals because I am the president of SAV, the Sociological Association at Virginia Tech. SAV is just one of the many opportunities students have to gain outside knowledge and networks through the sociology department.

Meeting a great Hokie

I have had many outstanding experiences here at Virginia Tech. So far the most memorable is when I got Frank Beamer's autograph.

This summer my family came down to help me move into my new apartment (of course they came down early to spend extra time with me!). The morning of the move we went to grab some breakfast at Famous Anthony’s, which is amazing by the way. While waiting for our food, my mom says, “Is that the coach for VT?” I was in complete shock that she even knew VT's football coach and I preceded to say, “Oh my god, yes it is!”

After contemplating if we should go over and talk to him, or leave him be because he is a normal person and probably just wants to eat his breakfast in peace, my grandmother got up and walked over to his table. She introduced herself and told Coach Beamer that I was a student at VT. By the end of it all, my entire family was at his table talking to him. He and his wife are wonderful people. Coach Beamer gave us all personal autographs. It was so awesome. I now have his autograph framed on my desk to remind me of the day I met one of the greatest HOKIES ever.

Deadlines, Deadlines, Deadlines

The application deadline for transfer students is February 15. Remember to submit your transcripts from all previous colleges. We can accept unofficial transcripts during the application review process, but you still need to send us official transcripts as soon as possible. The University Registrar must have official transcripts in order to give you credit for the coursework you have completed.

You will be notified by May 1 of our admission decision. However, we try to get offers out as soon as possible. We do what we call a modified rolling admission. So, if you get your application to us (with your transcripts) in January, there's a good chance you will hear from us before May 1. We do this because we realize that you have to make plans and we want to let you know our decision as soon as possible so you can make the appropriate plans to continue your education.

Each year we receive about 3,000 applications for approximately 1,000 spots. The most important factors we look at for admission are:

Substantial progress toward prerequisite courses - especially English and math and the science for your intended major.
GPA - we consider applicants with a 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or better, but the most competitive applicants have a 3.0 or better. Check out our articulation agreements with the Virginia Community College System.
Applicants are in good standing with the colleges and universities they have attended.

If you are interested in scholarships and financial aid, you must complete the FAFSA (be sure to have it sent to Virginia Tech - code: 003754). The deadline for the FAFSA and General Scholarship Application is March 1. A lot of our scholarships at VT require the FAFSA. So, you will need to fill it out even if you think you won't qualify for aid.

There's no denying that the bulk of the work we assistant directors do in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions centers around recruiting high school seniors, and reviewing their applications once they arrive. But we get applications from lots of other students too: non-degree students, international students, and transfer students.

It's this last group I'd like to discuss today, as they represent a pretty large chunk of our student body. You probably didn't know that each year 15 to 20 percent of incoming students enter Virginia Tech as transfers. While some of them hail from other four-year universities, many of them come to us from the Virginia Community College System (check out our articulation agreements). Now, we don't like to say that there's a back door into Virginia Tech, but if there were one, transferring from one of Virginia's many community colleges would be it.

When it comes to transfers, we typically have fewer applicants and we don't take SAT or ACT scores into consideration, nor do we heavily weight the high school transcript, grades, courses, etc. All we consider is a student's current college grade point average and the transferability of their college curriculum. With proper advising, students can be competitive to transfer to VT with even one year of college course work under their belts.

So, keep that in mind when you're thinking of ways to become a Hokie! We've got tons of majors to choose from, and some have different transfer qualifications than others, so make sure to talk to one of us assistant directors before you apply.

Unlocking the transfer guide

If you want to transfer to Virginia Tech, it is best to visit a course guide. This will help you determine which classes you should take at the college in which you are currently enrolled.

Transferring from the Virginia Community College System?

If you are transferring from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), you can check out 2009-2010 Transfer Guide. This guide contains the recommended courses for each Virginia Tech undergraduate degree program.

What do do:

Visit the transfer guid e, click on "Entering VCCS 2009-2010 Virginia Tech Transferable Courses"
Then, click on the major that interests you.
Once you select the major that interests you, you can see the VCCS course number and the corresponding VT course number for each major.

Transferring from a 4-year institution or non-Virginia 2-year college?

If you have graduated from high school and are attempting, or have attempted more than 12 credit hours at another college or university (including a community college that is not in the Commonwealth of Virginia), please take the following steps to ensure that the classes you are taking will count towards your intended major at Virginia Tech.

Visit the transfer equivalency database,
Select the state in which your college is located and then the college you are attending from the drop down menus.
Then, select "Find Courses"
Now you can select the courses are enrolled in at your current college and see what the transfer equivalents are at Virginia Tech.

Articulation Agreements:

Articulation agreements have been created with Richard Bland College and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). In short, this means that if you take certain courses and maintain a high GPA at Richard Bland College or at a Virginia Community College, you have guaranteed admission at Virginia Tech. I have had an overall positive experience as a transfer student at Virginia Tech. I found the first semester to be the most difficult -- making friends, finding opportunities to get involved on campus, balancing school work, and adjusting to the Hokie lifestyle.

VT is significantly larger than the school that I transferred from, which was quite the adjustment not only socially but also academically. I quickly learned that this was a place that I had to work for myself -- I had to make the most of my time here. I found several activities to get involved with including club sports, organizations within my major, and transfer orientation. These activities helped me to quickly make friends with similar interests as well as helped me to learn what it means to be a Hokie. I was able to find my niche at the university through getting involved in these organizations.

I transferred from Richard Bland College of William and Mary, which is a junior college designed to prepare one for a four-year university. My time spent at Richard Bland College was extremely helpful in my transition from high school to a university setting/curriculum, as well as on my pocket!

I definitely do not regret attending junior college after high school, nor do I regret transferring to Virginia Tech. I decided to apply to Virginia Tech as well as many other in state universities because Richard Bland College had a partnership for guaranteed admission if one graduated with and associates degree and had a 3.0 GPA.

I had always dreamed of coming to Virginia Tech but did not have the grades right out of high school, so this was the perfect opportunity for me. I knew I wanted to attend Virginia Tech because I had heard so many great things about their friendliness and school-spirited atmosphere, along with their educational opportunities at hand.

A few basics: shelter, food, and transportation

Each year, Virginia Tech welcomes nearly 1,000 transfer students to campus. About one half of our transfer students come from the Virginia Community College System, the other half transfer from other four-year or two-year schools. In order to be considered as a transfer student, you should have attempted 12 or more credit hours at another college or university after you graduated from high school.

Once you transfer to VT, you're a Hokie. As a transfer student, you have access to plenty at Virginia Tech. For starters, Virginia Tech offers a great education with award-winning faculty, research opportunities, a beautiful campus, more than 600 clubs and organizations, and great food. Not to mention, the opportunity to be a Hokie! (Wait, I may have already mentioned the Hokie deal, but it's a big deal -- worth multiple mentions. If you become a Hokie, you'll get what I mean!)

Transportation & Parking

If you do land a dorm, then you can get a resident parking permit. That doesn't mean that you will score a parking space directly in front of the buildings you frequent for classes each day. That simply means that your parking permit will have a big "R" on it to indicate that you are a "resident student." If you live off campus, the same deal applies -- no reserved parking. Or shall I say, no desirable reserved parking. Instead, your parking permit will have a big "C" on it for "commuter student." Minus the fact that areas of campus can be hilly, this is a bike and pedestrian friendly campus. Oh, and with Blacksburg Transit (the bus that gets you around campus and the Town of Blacksburg), you might not even need your car. Should you choose to go green and not bring your car to campus, consider participating in the FREE Bike, Bus, & Walk (BB&W) program.

Our main campus consists of more than 125 buildings, 2,600 acres, and an airport. Virginia Tech is ranked 42nd in university research in the United States.

As far as transfer students go, last year 2,788 students applied to Virginia Tech, 1,359 were offered admission and 925 accepted our offer of admission.

Because we are a university, learning is obviously important to us. To back that up, we have amazing educational facilities, top-notch technology, research opportunities for students, and award-winning faculty. While these are all key pieces of your college experience, we truly believe that learning is not just reserved for inside the classroom. We have more than 600 student clubs and organizations. Oh, and our motto, Ut Prosim (That I may serve), allows one the occasional privilege to do some community service (not like when you toilet papered the gym in high school and had to give up your weekend to undo your artwork – this is the good, fun kind of community service).

Now if you are into sports, you should check out recreation and intramural sports. Also, you really need to experience a football game at Lane Stadium. Once you do, the Metallica song, Enter Sandman, will never ever hold the same meaning for you again. Speaking of football, Virginia Tech plays Nebraska on Saturday. So, Let's Go... HOKIES!

Transferring to Virginia Tech was an easy transition for me. I understand that experiences are different for each individual, but if sharing my experiences helps you decide, then my decision to come to VT was one of the best decisions I made during my college career.

As a transfer student coming in from the Virginia Community College System, I was given the opportunity to take part in an on-site review option VT does throughout the state. When I found out that a VT admissions director was visiting my community college, I made an appointment with them and was told right then whether or not I was accepted. All I had to do was bring a transcript, my completed application, and non-refundable $50 application fee to the appointment.

Once I was offered admission, I participated in the summer transfer orientation day where an advisor sat down with me and helped me understand what classes would/would not transfer and what courses I still needed to take in order to graduate.

I loved the feeling I got being on campus and knowing I was a HOKIE. Regardless of the fact that I did not have the dorm experience here as a freshman, I was still able to create lifelong friendships by participating in the many different clubs and intramural sports offered to the student body. Even though my time here was shorter than those who come in as freshman, I found a home and a family here at VT.
